Brief distractions

without comments

It’s easy to get distracted in this household.

Thursday was a wash and Sunday I just wanted to fall into a coma after the weekend. We had a birthday party for my son. To make a long story short, everyone had a good time. Even me.

That being said, I got some work done on Project Tiny. I’ve got it compiling with the various with the logon functionality kind of working. I hope to have that fixed up tomorrow as well as the rest of user creation, admin, and what ever else.

Since I’m behind a couple of days I’m extending my deadline out two days. So sometime next week we should have something.

Making with the pretty pretty

with one comment

Found a nice free template that I hope I can manipulate and make work for Project Tiny. If you want to take a look go here. OpenSourceTemplates.org doesn’t have a lot of choice, but I like the vibe of their site. Plus they seem a bit more sincere in what they’re trying to do. Plus I get sick of looking at Template Mills that you find on the net.

Not too bad so far. Business Objects are done, I’m laying the ground work for the website now, and I’ve spent no money so far. I’ve got about 15 more minutes before I call it an evening.

Tiny is a state of mind

without comments

So I stayed up way to late playing around with Wordpress on this blog. Tonight I finished with the tables of the database. Next I start coding the base classes. So far this is pretty fun.

I’m using a lot of existing functionality and cutting my scope just to release the bare bones and go from there. I’m also adding another restriction to this, um, exercise. My initial budget is $75 at the most. That seems pretty fair, I think.

I’ve got my chores to do now, so I’m signing out. If anyone knows where I can get some free or cheap web 2.0-ish templates, let me know.

Project Tiny

without comments

I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately. All sorts of blogs and all sorts of books about business, about entrepreneurs, about Getting Things Done (aka GTD), and about a Southern Gothic Ghost story (hey, a guy needs a freakin’ break).

Anyway, a recurring theme kept coming up; stop planning. Don’t worry about the perfect plan, or business model, or heck, even an good idea. Just get something out there. Something that will test an idea. No matter how stupid. Stop planning and put it to action.

Well Project Tiny is my stupid idea. Is it inane? Yup. Is it juvenile? Check. Is it absolutely frivolous? I definitely hope so.

The thing I’m going to put to the test is that you have to limit what you deliver, at least for the first iteration. Cut things until you can get something out there quickly. So here are the parameters of this little project:

  • It will last exactly two weeks.
  • I will only work Weekday/School nights (Sun – Thurs).
  • I will work about an hour a night

Sounds interesting. I know it’s been done before, but I haven’t done it so… that makes it new, doesn’t it?

Tonight starts with database table design and possibly some base class construction. I’ll see exactly how far I get tomorrow.

That’s it! I’m off to work.
